Yale Materials Handling Corporation is a corporation that produces forklift trucks and other material handling equipment. The company was started as a lock manufacturer in 1868 as Yale & Towne Manufacturing. Yale produced its first forklift truck in the 1920's. It is based in Greenville. North Carolina, USA.

History[]

Linus Yale and Henry Towne formed a new company in 1868, Yale Lock Manufacturing Company', later to become Yale and Towne Manufacturing Co. In 1920, Yale began manufacturing a low-lift platform truck, tow tractors and forklift trucks.

In the 1930s, production of forklifts began in England, and the purchase of BKS fork lift trucks in Germany. In 1969, a joint venture was formed in Japan with the Sumitomo Corporation to produce forklifts from Yale under license.

Yale merged with Eaton Corporation in 1963 as the Industrial Truck Division of Eaton, Yale & Towne, Inc. In 1971, the Japanese joint venture was named Sumitomo-Yale Co., Ltd.[1] The company was purchased in 1985 by the North American Coal Corporation (NACCO). The company was spun off in 2012 to form Hyster-Yale Materials Handling, Inc.[2]

Yale & Towne created or purchased the Trojan Industries division of Batavia, New York, which manufactured Wheeled Loaders. The division was later sold off to O&K.
