Vermeer Corporation is a privately-owned global company that manufactures agricultural, environmental and construction equipment. Headquartered in Pella, Iowa, Vermeer operates in North America, Europe and Asia. It was founded in Pella in 1948 by Gary Vermeer as Vermeer Manufacturing Company.

History[]

In the 1940s, Gary Vermeer invented a modified farm wagon with a mechanical hoist to ease unloading. The demand that followed led him to establish the "Vermeer Manufacturing Company" in Pella, Iowa, in 1948. In the 1950s Vermeer began to produce other equipment, such as the Pow-R-Driver a device that utilized a tractor-drive system to power hammermills, corn shellers and irrigation pumps, Pow-R-Sprinkler, a trenching machine and a horizontal stump cutter, the design of which is still widely-used. A major breakthrough in the agriculture industry was the development of the round baler.

Gary Vermeer retired as CEO in 1989 from Vermeer Corporation but remains with the corporation as Chairman Emeritus of the Board. Gary's two children, Robert Vermeer and Mary Andringa Vermeer, took over the company after Gary's retirement.

In 1991 Vermeer Corporation launched its NAVIGATOR horizontal directional drilling machine line-up which has been used in installing fiber optics communications cables. As a trencher equipment manufacturer, Vermeer trenching equipment has been used on road construction and mining projects, within the equipment rental industry, and on other job applications.

In 2008 Vermeer took over with the Lely group of the Netherlands German baler manufacturer Welger.[1]

Today, Vermeer markets 100 agricultural and industrial products worldwide, and operates 1,500,000 square feet (140,000 m²) of plant space for manufacturing.
