vehicle modification is the general term applied to practice of taking a standard production vehicle and modifying it to look different and/or to change it mechanically to do a different job or to have better performance.
In some counties this has reached an art form in creating unique vehicles with radical paint jobs or heavily modified bodies. An early form was the American hot rod scene that started in the 1950s. Others are the highly decorated trucks seen in India & Pakistan.
