Hi, welcome to Tractor & Construction Plant Wiki!

David Brown 770 Selectamatic

Welcome

Thanks for your edit to the File:IRON FAIRY Amethyst 6x2.jpg page.

There's plenty of information to add to the project, so I hope you'll stay with us and help make many more improvements.

The aim is to gather information on every make and model of Tractor, Construction Plant machine, Steam tractor and Truck built, as well as related material and list every example in preservation both in the UK and world wide.

Details of Museums, Clubs and Private collections of preserved vintage and classic machinery is also very welcome. The site covers all makes of machinery, so if its missing add it please !

Recent changes is a great first stop, because you can see what pages other people have been editing, and where you can help.
Questions? You can ask at the Help desk or on the "discussion" page associated with each article.
Need help? The Community Portal has an outline of the site, and pages to help you learn how to edit.
Please sign in every time you edit, so that we (and others) can credit your contributions to you !

We're really happy to have you here, and look forward to working with you!

Please leave a message on my talk page if I can help with anything! -- BulldozerD11 (Talk) 23:40, 22 February 2012

Re:Photos Edit

Hi Marco

Thanks for adding photos of most of the models.

I've moved your images into the gallery which hadd an image in but you deleted for some reason (accidentally ?). If you have a load of images floating about the text and headings from the lower sections wraps about them and ends up as a strip in the middle. (Its how the software works & narrow pagesforced due to the wide bar on the right for the adverts included by Wikia)

To put them in the gallery 'manually' paste the file link such as into the gallery ona new line & remove the leading and trailing [[ brackets and after the .jpg add a | and then the description text i.e Iron Fairy Amythyst 6x2 crane.

Add next image on a new line - Items in descriptions can include 'wiki links' which lead to the article for that model (when created) so Jones Cranes gives when the page is saved a link to the Jones Cranes article.

A lot of the article needs re formating to add headings and links to related articles - This one has been missed by the looks.

Each model should link to its own article (eventually).

Thanks again for adding the Photos.

Re your message Edit

Hi Marco

Thanks for your message. I'm not sure what is hapening with your edits and several by IP editors but the formating from the article keeps getting stripped out so heading and links disapear. Note: - When it has the correct sub headings in it you can edit individual sections of the article rather than the whole article. The use of headigs adds the section to the table of contents automaticaly. local headins are added by prefixing the text witha semi-colon e.g ;Example local heading which gives

Example local heading

This heading ^^ does not appear in the TOC

GalleriesEdit

This heading ^^ will appear in the TOC and has an edit button next to it to edit just the section below (down to the next heading)

The images within the gallery have a different format to individual images.

 • Individual images - thumb|sizepx|some caption text were sizepx is a number of pixels for the image. Normally individual images are NOT set to a sizes as the users preferences then decides how big they are !! (default is 200px). Note you CANNOT make an image bigger than it actualy is originally. click the image and go to its description page and it tells you how big it is there along with other info such as which pages its used on and who uploaded it. - http://tractors.wikia.com/wiki/File:IRON_FAIRY_Sapphire_4WD.jpg
 • In the gallery section - File:Imagename|caption text (e.g it has no and no 'thumb' code. The gallery is also set to display at 280px which is the optimum size for the page with 2 columns of images !! as the screen is 1000px wide o/a and the righthand side bar uses 350px so borders and the gap takes up the rest.
 • Image captions can have wiki links in them as a way of navigationg to other related pages so the photo of a Iron Fairy IF15A will link to the Iron Fairy IF15A article were more info on the model and extra photos can go. (I had added them to the gallery images but somebody removed them again !!)
 • The gallery has a button below it to add images to the gallery easily. (it is best to upload them with the Upload photo button on the bottom toolbar first as infomation such as copyright and sourc can be added and the name of the file made to be descriptive i.e Iron fairy model xy lifting a tank).

Licensing/COPYRIGHTEdit

While it is great that you would like to add more images to the Wiki I am concerned as to were you have 'borrowed' some of them from as they are from other web sites (a quick google search brings them up !!). Images on Wikia need a copyright license adding at upload or just after to comply with Wikia terms of use. If the images are photos taken by you, then you need to release them into the Public Domain using PD-self or license them under a creative commons license such as were anybody reusing them should credit you as author. If they are NOT your own photos then you should say were they are from by a link to the web site if you are using them under a claim of wikipedia:fair use if the web site/image is not published under Creative commons license. A lot of individual dont mind you using there photos as long as they get credit for them but other could Prosecute you for Theft of there interlectual property !! some sites such as wikipedia/Wikimedia Commons allow most of the images to be copied and re-used, with others such as Flickr only some are suitably licensed. Manufactures publicity photos are OK taged as Promotional to acknowledge they are probably copyrighted but are being used to discuss the product which is fair use. This image here belongs to a preservation society so they should be credited by a source back link. The Forestry site that the early IF machine is from allows re use if attributed. etc.

For more information see Help:Image copyright tags wikia:licensing and visit wikipedia -wikipedia:image copyrights + Wikipedia:Uploading images

Once images are uploaded on here they often rate higher in search engines than they did before so the original author may see them !! (Note:uploaders are responsible for images they upload under US law and the local laws in their own country which may conflict)

I could add thousands of images just by trawling the net, but as I have 10's of thousands of my own pending and the millions on Commons and Flickr to use if i had more time to create pages rather than 'run' the wiki.

After that lot - Keep up the Good work expanding the article and details of the models built. P.s> I'm not saying dont add images but please add suitable license tags (if in doupt ask me by posting a web link to the site/image)

Re:new photos Edit

I notice you have added more photos but you are still not adding copyright info and/or source links to them. If they are from other web sites you can use them under a claim of wikipedia:fairuse in most cases but you should credit the source site with a link back to the site. If you use the "Add photo" button on the right hand side of the display please click the 'more options' button to see the license drop down list and select one.

Images which are not licensed will get tagged with No license by a bot eventually and then may all get deleted by any admin or Wikia Inc. for copyright violation as they do not comply with Wikia's Terms of Use for the site (which were recently updated). I'm posting messages to everybody who is adding images with license info missing to reduce future issues with content on the Tractor wiki site.

I would prefer to be adding content to expand the site not having to go round 'policing' content and cleaning up images that has been added without the correct license information. Most users on Forums dont mind there photos being used if they and the site are credited as a source. If they are your own photos then you should be credited if another site uses your photos which they canot do if you dont identify them with a License tag when you upload them.

Re:Style/formatingEdit

From some of the formating you are using I'm getting the impression some of the content may be from another site or you have edited a wiki based on a different version of Wiki software as some used different formating code methods to MediaWiki which is used by Wikipedia and Wikia.

A few tips;

 • We dont normally use Limited, Ltd, Gmbh, Plc etc for company page title unless the name is made up of Common English words or is named after a person who has (or could have) an article seperate to the company article or there may be other people with the same name.
 • We dont use the advertising industries habit of capitalising company names or using bold at every use of the name.
 • The First instance of the Company name or Brandname in the lead section is done in Bold
 • We do link other company names within the article if they have or may have a article, but generally only once within each major section. Other companies are done in italics.
 • Headings are not created with the bold feature ( but with the Heading/Headline Button or by == Heading text == for a main heading & sub levels are created by adding extra = leading & trailng = signs. This Heading then appears in the Table of Contents (TOC) automatically.
 • To create sub heading (in bold) which is not in the TOC just prefix the text with a ;
 • Model list are normally created with a link for each model to allow the creation of a page for the individual model in the form Jones KL22 or using a 'piped' link like this KL22 if the make prefix is desired to be hidden (ususlly just done with the main body text to reduce clutter)
 • We dont underline links
 • Facts quoted from books are best 'cited' using ref tags within the text rather than just adding a list of books at the end. These refs are automatically numbered and formatted for display by Reflist within the refs section.

We would like to collect lots more articles on all the hundreds of lesser known manufacturers that dont get much coverage and which very little info is available on the models they built on the web other than a few photos on fan sites. But we must be careful not to just copy word for word articles from books

Once a company has a article witha list of models more detailed info on the individual models and the model history can be aded with spec & more photos on a seperate page e.g like Farmall Cub

Thanks again for sharing your knowledge on former British crane makers with us Marco, I hope you help expand some of the others and add more details for individual models. I hope some of these tips are usefull and if you are unsure of any I will try to explain better (Wikia's help pages are not the best but the system keeps being updated so things change and Individual wikis have their own 'style'). When a large string of edits has taken place it is easy to loose content accidentally such as 'refs', templates or even complete section when re ordering them. (PS I'm assuming some of the IP edits to the Iron Fairy Cranes and Jones Cranes are by you when not logged in due to similarities in the edits).

Re:Image source Edit

Marc as stated previously (above) you need to state the Source of the images you are adding if they are not your own photos so the correct Copyright tag can be added. Some of the images you have added are clearly not your own work and will have to be deleted if not correctly licensed/attributed to a source or used under a claim of Fair use with a link to the source to comply with Wikia licensing for images. Failure to add relevant a source and/or license template to images you upload may result in a block from editing. -   BulldozerD11   talk    contribs   22:45, May 14, 2012 (UTC)

RE:Image size Edit

Marco I've set the gallery to a larger size but most of the images are only thumbnail size so will NOT display larger. The image size is often reduced by people posting on the web & full size copies of Brochures and Data sheets Should NOT be used anyway under a claim of Fair use which is what they MUST be licensed under to be used on Wikia as its copyright does not belong to you or other people posting copies of them on the web. (unless very old books or photos that have expired copyright).

The only way of making images scanned from books bigger than the original scan is to enlarge them using a photo/image program before uploading them if the scan is of a high enough resolution to allow it without loss of quality. Note: Images from Books are usually copyright to the author/publisher and if you upload them you can only do so under a claim of 'fair use' if that is legal in Portugal (& state the source on the images description page) or you are liable for any copyright violation claimes under Wikia's Terms of Use for images you have uploaded to the site.

Images from web sites that you have permission to use can be taged as Permission and add a link to the website in the images description page. Here is the description page for one of your recent images -Here

Click this image to see its description page foran image i copied from Wikipedia commons that was originally from the Geograph project and is licensed under a Creative Commons license by the original author (creator)

File:Anglesey_Abbey_south_side_-_geograph.org.uk_-_777802.jpg

Note:If you use the add photo button on the right or the upload photo on the bottom toolbar they both have options to select a license from a list. The bottom one also allows you to add other info about the image and its source i.e a link to the web site its from or the title of the book it is scanned from etc. e.g. File:Knight-Daimler_engine,_side_section_(Rankin_Kennedy,_Modern_Engines,_Vol_III).jpg (copied from Wikimedia Commons). Images from Ebay should have a weblink back to the original image.

RE:scanned images Edit

Thanks for finding more images and uploading them to the wiki but when using other peoples work i.e scanned images from books please credit the source and add the fairuse tag to the images description page - File:STEELFAB_Shawnee_Poole_FD750_Dumpertrailer_and_Fordson_Major_tractor.jpg needs details of the book it was from adding to the page and the template adding.

Note I have trimmed the excess off-white space around the image & rotated it slightly as it was not square during scanning and then reuploaded it. Please trim/crop over sized scans before uploading using an image editor (there are several free ones to use online or download) and most can 'clean' scans up to make them clearer / sharper. -   BulldozerD11   talk    contribs   23:20, June 23, 2012 (UTC)

Recent images Edit

Marco Thanks for adding all the Whitlock images but they are all thumbnails taken from web sites. Bigger versions of these brochures are available for most of them - But should must state were copied from if from the web and add a License tag such as Datasheet or Promotional to them as THEY ARE Copyright images or if you have scanned an original copy say so on the images description page (Source= Scan of xyz brochure (own copy)).

See here for an example of a brochure with most of the required info added (it should ideally list the actual web site with a link to the site) File:BRISTOL_TAURUS_brochure.jpg

If you use the upload button on the bottom toolbar when logged-in it offers the relevant data fields to fill in to generate the table on the page when uploading the images making it quicker to add photos. or use Special:Upload to try it.

RE:recent edits and uploads Edit

Hello Marco

Thanks for expanding the Calsa article and adding images of several models. But when an article has an info box the images generally go in a gallery if the article is only short. I had updated to text to link to more articles but you removed them and added some new heading inbold, and took the images out of the gallery. Headings create the table of contents when created using equalls signs == Heading text == and adding extra ones each side for each sub heading level.

I also noticed that you are still failing to add relevant copyright / source information with the images you are uploading. Some of these images are clearly from other peoples web sites. Please add a license/copyright tag when uploading the photos and indicate the source of the file by adding a web link back to the site. Company brochures/spec sheets can be taged as Datasheet. If they are your own work please state this by adding own or self to the files page. A lot of users who post photos dont mind other people using them if they are credited as the author, but others may get upset as it looks like you are the author of the image rather than them and could take legal action for copyright violation as it is technically theft !! Its like the golf shop selling balls and clubs with "Marco" on rather than the actual manufacturer that supplied thems name.

You add some very good information on companies and their products and images but adding other peoples photos without due credit to them is not good for the this sites reputation. Images from sites such as wikipedia, wikimedia commons, Flickr etc that are licensed under a Creative Commons license are fine if the author/creator is credited. I know I dont like finding my own photos on other sites without being attributed to me. A lot of mine are posted to Commons by other people which is fine as i dont have time to post to both sites.

Please address these issues on your uploaded images - I prefer to add content not track down image problems and undo/revert edits.

RE:CALSA images Edit

Hi Marco

A Google search indicates that most of your recent uploads on CALSA were taken (copied) from a Spanish Forum - http://www.camionesclasicos.com/FORO/viewtopic.php?f=86&t=524

If you wish to use the images on Wikia you can do so under a claim of fair use as they belong to the photographer and are copyrighted but you must put a link back to the source web site and credit the original photographer who posted the image and tag the images with the template Fairuse on the images page.

RE:Iron fairy image Edit

This looks like a Hudson Kiwi Crane not an Iron Fairy to me !! The small image you uploaded appears to be thumbnail for the image from photobucket Here which has been linked to on several forums.

Please stop STEALING images from other sites without crediting the owners !! you can use them on Wikia under a claim of fairuse as long as YOU credit the author (photographer) and add a link to the site it is taken from. But You must upload it under a claim of fairuse your self to comply with wikias terms of use.

-   BulldozerD11   talk    contribs   01:56, March 20, 2013 (UTC)

Hi Marcos re your reply;

Hello Bulldozer11, I wish to leave it quite clear that I was wrongly accused of "stealing photos" as some pf them are copyrighted and I was unaware of that as I put them on BHCC IFand CALSA pages.THEY were actually given to me by email by other people who follow other old machinery pictures . So all I have to say is that I apologize for any inconvenience or offence I may caused but Thank You for your time.MARCO SANTOS.

I'll apologise for being heavey handed and using the term "Stealing" with regard to the images. You may have got them from else were but anybody doing a net search and turning up the same images is liable to draw the same conclusion. Whilst trying to keep this site tidy and with a structure I regularly check recent changes and uploads to remove irrelevant material and spam etc. and copy edit the text for clarity and to try to get a considered format to pages.
I know some aspects of the site are not 'user friendly' such as image upload methods (the fact that their are several different ways of doing so and the information asked for varies) does noyt help but that is the system Wikia gives us. Wikia also also has policy on images which part of their terms of use regarding image copyright and adding data to them with regard to source of the image. Each wiki can expand on that with their own policy to be more detailed and/or strict as to what is acceptable and what info is required (obviously it cannot be more lax than the minimum set by Wikia).
I had asked you on several occasions to add sources/license to images you have uploaded (as i have of several users recently and in the past) but had no response from you to my messages or any action taken to list sources of the images i had posted about above. I have had cases in the past on forums i visit of their being discusions about the theft of peoples images for use on other sites. I also find My own photos on many other sites and dont mind people using them as long as they are attributed to me, or this site. I dont generally follow discussions on non- English sites but understand from some international visitors to forums i do visit that in general most people like to be credited for their work (photos) when used else were. Some images uploaded to here (not by you) have been removed by wikia staff because of official complaints made under US Copyright Law which covers Wikia hosted Wikis, regardless of were the uploader is from, even if standards are different in their country.
To be 'safe' i could/should delete every upload i see that has no source/license added, but a) I dont have time, b) It would remove a lot of content, c) It would remove a lot of good images, and D)Wikia should fix the upload process to make it work better and the rules are not 100% clear as to what is/not allowed.
I am happy for users to add images uder the Faireuse principle from sources such as books, maunuals, publicity photos and manufacturers web sites that is generally considered to be copyrighted as long as it is credited to the owner/author on the images information page. I personally prefer to use: A) my own photos, B) photos from wikipedia/commons etc that are under a wikipedia:Creative commons license and attribute them to the source site and author. C) scans of books / data sheets (used under fair use and attributed). I try to follow wikipedia's policys were compatable with Wikia's rules.
I could spend all day and night importing and uploading and searching for more info on firms but i dont have that much time. Especially if I have to keep breaking off to act as housekeeper/janitor and Policeman on the Wiki, which i would prefer not to do. But with it being open to anyone to post info, I need to maintain it as well as expand it, but this dose mean that people such as your self and other Users can help to build the information about obscure firms you added such as Calsa which i had not heard of before!!

Your contributions are much valued in that respect Marco and I did not mean to offend you. But would appreciate your help/cooperation with regard to fixing issues about Image sources/attribution and copyright when uploaded to the Wiki. -   BulldozerD11   talk    contribs   23:35, March 21, 2013 (UTC)

PS This may not make total sense when translated. If you ask me about any thing that does not make sense i will try to clarify it for you.

Missing Copyright and Source Data Edit

Marco we still have an issue with copyright and sources !!

You have again uploaded a batch of images many of which look like they belong to other people !! You obviously did not take most of the photos yourself. To retain the images on Wikia YOU must add the source of the images and a copyright license template at upload selected from the list of options or add one manually to each image after upload by editing the images description page.

Try using this link to upload images instead of the add photo button - http://tractors.wikia.com/wiki/Special:Upload as it gives a list of item to fill in with the relevant information.

alternativly copy this template and fill in the blanks

Example of adding data;

which gives this on the images file description page;

Description

Author

user:A photographer

Re:Source links Edit

Hi Marcos I see you added a list of image sources (external links) to Jones Cranes article (shown below).

ccmv.aecsouthall.co.uk

www.machinerytrader.com

www.machineryzone.eu

www.mascus.com

www.wikipedia.org

www.album-mmt.it

NO Copyright Violation done on any photos, and used under kind permission, Solely used for illustration purposes per make and model. No harm done to their owners.

Unfortunately this does not identify the source of the individual images. To comply with Wikia image licensing rules the web link needs to be on the individual images page. Images from commercial sales sites such as Machinery Trader, Machinery Zone and Mascus can be used by tagging as Fairuse and adding a link to the original image page - Just edit the images page to add the relevant data now. The images dont usually have any data on the actual image author to attribute them to an individual, just the source site and advert they were taken from.

CCMV images are by several different photographers and ARE copyrighted. You can use them under a claim of Fair Use if you wish but the author and source should be individually attributed on the images page see File:IRON_FAIRY_Amethyst_TD_Mobilecrane.jpg were i've add the details and a fair use license as an example for you. If they object to your useage of their work they can issue Wikia with a DMCA Take down notice and/or prosecute you ! (Wikia has removed some images posted on here by a Tractor Wiki user due to a DMCA notice from another web site hence my warnings about copyright violation) Far less likely if they are credited as author and the host site has link to it.

The same should be done for album-mmt.it images (photos).

Most wikipedia images require attribution of the author under the CC-by-sa-3.0 / GFDL license the site is published under. I personally copy the original image information/data and license when importing such images - see this one I copied the other day File:Hanomag_R16_tractor.JPG which is adjusted slightly to link to the users page at wikipedia or commons. But you can just add File:Hanomag R16 tractor.JPG to the file which then provides a link back to the file at wikipedia/commons for the full info.

I can make/add a similar custom license template for web sites we regularly use images from to make it simpler.

Note:Images scanned from books should be attributed to the publication as most are not out of copyright yet. Manufacturers datsheets/specsheets are fine just tagged as datasheet but should be bigger than a thumbnail copy so reasonable detail can be seen but not full size copies. Anything smaller than 200px that is not clear will is deleted as they are a waste of space in the galleries.

Thanks for starting to address this license/source issue Marco. It saves me wasting time posting messages on user pages and file pages, trying to track down sources and adding No license tags to images before deleting non compliant images and then having to cleaning up articles they were removed from.

BTW: Its a lot simpler to add the data during uploading if you use the upload photo on the bottom toolbar (when logged in) rather than the add image to gallery button or add photo button. Then you dont have to go back and add it manually to each image later. -   BulldozerD11   talk    contribs   00:13, April 10, 2013 (UTC)

Re:New page problemEdit

Hi. Marco I've not been on much recently but it may be that Wikia have had problems over Christmas with the system. I'll see if i can create a blank page for Wakefield Construction Machinery Ltd which you can then add to.

Log-in problemEdit

 • DEAR SIRS It seems this website will not let me in even though I am a registered user anyway, but for some odd reason for a couple of weeks I keep getting a message that claims why information provided about me may be outdated so it says on the "My Account Sign In". However when using my office laptop yes I get access to this website without any problems. What is causing this annoying trouble? Kind Regards 1976lorrydriver MARCO SANTOS Tavira Portugal
Hi Marco if your having problems logging in to the site try contacting Fandom / Wikia User help dept by email as they operate the accounts for all Wikia hosted sites. Every so often the individual wiki sites have problems, often when they do a upgrade to the various software packages which runs all the Fandom sites they host. I used to visit the central User help forum regularly at one time but haven't done so latterly so i don't know if there have been issues lately.
If login access works from one computer but not another on a different/seperate network it may be a problem with the data cached by your web browser. I couldn't get pages to load last week, but i had just changed my internet provider and modem/router so put it down to that being the problem, as i had problems with other sites loading at times as well. You had problems creating a new page last Christmas i see from the notes above. ! --  BulldozerD11   talk    contribs   21:40, December 18, 2017 (UTC)
