The Edrob/International 544 was a utility tractor built by International Harvester from 1961 to 1968 in the US.

Model history

Main article: International Harvester

For row-crop utility version see: International 504 Hi-Clear. For industrial model see: International 2504. For row crop model see: Farmall 504.

The International 544 Utility was longer and taller than the 504 Utility it replaced and about 700 lb heavier (partly from larger standard rear tires). New engines moved it up from the 3-4 plow 45-hp class to the full 4-plow 55-hp class. A new 200ci C200 gas engine, derived from the C301 6-cylinder of the big 856 tractor, replaced the old C153. The available diesel engine was a new German International-built D239 4-cylinder, replacing the American-built D188. As before, the main transmission was a 5-speed and a 2-speed Torque Amplifier was available.

The gasoline-powered 1968 International 544 Utility compared very well in weight and power with the John Deere 2020 and Massey-Ferguson MF165. However, the 544 was priced considerably higher than the 504 it replaced and ended up several hundred dollars more expensive than its two closest competitors. Production figures are difficult to interpret because they include both gas and diesel models and various chassis types. However, it appears that the International production and sales were far behind the Massey-Ferguson and John Deere. The 6-cylinder Oliver 1550 weighed much more than the others and cost more. In 1969 the upgraded Ford 4000 moved into the same power and price class as the International. The Massey-Ferguson MF165 was revised with a Perkins 212ci 4-cylinder gas engine. The Oliver 1555 was little changed from the 1550 it replaced.

The diesel version of the International 544 competed in 1968 with the diesel John Deere 2020, Massey-Ferguson MF165, and Oliver 1550 and in 1969 also with the Ford 4000 and Oliver 1555. Additional diesel-only models in this similar in power and price to the International included the 1968 David Brown 990 and Oliver 1450 (Fiat-built), the 1969 Oliver 1355 (also Fiat-built), and the upgraded 1970 David-Brown 990.

Tractor Comparison, gasoline version

When International Harvester brought out the 504 utility, the gasoline version competed directly with the Ford 801-series and the replacement 4000. The Case 540, Massey Ferguson MF65, and Oliver 550 were lighter, lower powered, and cheaper. The Case 640 and the standard-tread Oliver 770 had more power. When the John Deere 2010 utility came out, it also competed directly with the International, as did the Massey Ferguson MF165. The John Deere 2020, which replaced the 2010, moved up a power class, where it competed better with the Oliver 770. In 1968 the International 544 replaced the 504 and moved up to the same class as the John Deere 2020.

Tractor Comparison, diesel version

Competing with the International 504 were several other diesel-powered utility tractors in the 46 pto hp range: the Case 630, Ford 4000 3-cylinder, John Deere 2010U, Massey Ferguson MF65, and Zetor 4011. The Ford 801-series and 4-cylinder 4000, Long BMC Nuffield, Nuffield 10/42 and 3/45, Oliver 550 and 600, and Ursus C350 were all less powerful. The David Brown 990, John Deere 2020U, Massey Ferguson MF165, and Zetor 5511 were all slightly heavier and more powerful. Also competing to some extent with the International were the taller, heavier, Cockshutt 560, Fordson Super Major and Ford Super Major 5000, Nuffield 4/60 and 10/60, and Oliver 770 and 1550.
