The Edrob/Farmall 544 Hydro was a row crop tractor built by International Harvester from 1968 to 1973 in the US.

Model historyEdit

Main article: International Harvester

For gear drive version see: Farmall 544.

The Farmall 544 Hydro was basically the same as the gear drive Farmall 544 except for the 2-range hydrostatic transmission. To compensate for power losses in the hydraulic pump and motor of the transmission, engine rpm was increased from 2,200 to 2,400.

Tractor Comparison, tractors with gasoline engines and automated transmissions (hydrostatic, power shift, or torque converter)Edit

Tractor manufacturers devised several ways to reduce or eliminate clutching and gear shifting. The Farmall 544 was equipped with a 2-range hydrostatic transmission. The John Deere 2520 RC used an 8-speed power shift and had slightly more power. The Ford 5000 Row Crop used the 10-speed Select-O-Speed power shift and also had more power. The Ford 4000 Row Crop Select-O-Speed had less power. The Case 730CK Case-o-matic was equipped with an 8-speed manual transmission and torque converter.

Tractor Comparison, tractors with diesel engines and automated transmissions (hydrostatic, power shift, or torque converter)Edit

The Farmall 544 Hydro competed directly with the Case 730CK Case-o-matic, Ford 5000 Row Crop Select-O-Speed, and John Deere 2520 RC Power Shift.
