The Edrob/Farmall 504 was a row-crop tractor built by International Harvester from 1961 to 1968 in the US.

Model history

Main article: International Harvester

The Farmall 504 replaced the 340. The new model had a longer wheelbase and weighed several hundred pounds more. The gasoline engine had a larger bore and longer stroke to increase displacement from 135ci to 152ci. The governed rpm was also increased from 2,000 to 2,200 rpm.

The Farmall 504 Diesel replaced the 340 Diesel. The engine was given a longer stroke, increasing displacement from 166ci to 188ci. The bore and stroke were now the same as for the Farmall 560’s diesel engine, making the D188 4-cylinder essentially two-thirds of that 6-cylinder. The power output of the 504 Diesel was 47 pto hp, up from the 40 hp of the 340.

Tractor Comparison, gasoline version

The changes boosted the power output substantially, from 35 to 47 pto hp, and made the 504 approximately equal to the Ford 801-series, John Deere 2010, and Minneapolis-Moline 4-Star. The Allis-Chalmers D-15 had less power and the Case 641 had slightly more. The John Deere undercut the price of the Farmall by $420 and it appears that the John Deere also outsold the Farmall by a small margin. 1962 production for the John Deere 1010 was 10,150, including row crop and utility models, gas and diesel. The total production of the Farmall 504 row crop (6,190, gas and diesel) and International 504 Utility (2,875, gas and diesel) came to 9,065. Other manufacturers introduced several new models to this class during the production life of the Farmall 504. The mid-1963 Allis-Chalmers D-15 Series II grew in power to just about equal the Farmall, for a lower price. The mid-1966 Ford 4000 3-cylinder also equaled the Farmall. The 1966 John Deere 2020 moved ahead to 54 pto hp. In 1968 the more-powerful International Farmall 544 replaced the McCormick Farmall 504.

Tractor Comparison, diesel version

The Farmall 504 Diesel was very competitive in 1962 with the Case 631, Ford 901-series, John Deere 2010, and Minneapolis-Moline Jet Star and 4-Star and later with newer Minneapolis-Moline Jet Star II and Jet Star III and Ford 4000 3-cylinder. However, the John Deere 2020 moved ahead with 54 pto hp from its larger 203ci engine running at a higher 2,500 rpm. International responded in 1968 with the more-powerful Farmall 544.
