Back in the mid 1980's when Paul Beal, now of Aardvark Equipment Ltd. worked for M.T. Agricultural Engineering Ltd., Braintree, Essex, some 750mm deep machines were developed that used Ford 5000/6000/7000 series rear axle crown wheel & pinion sets for the final reduction of the rated P.T.O. speed to a more manageable 100r.p.m. approx. at the digging wheel, this also allowed the drive train to be turned through 90 degrees so the wheel ran directly behind the tractor. As Customer needs grew, Aardvark Equipment worked with M.J. Abbott to develop a 950mm deep wheel, but found the Ford tractor axle components had reached its' limits. As a result, a new larger 1000mm deep wheel was developed using a bespoke heavy duty Italian bevel box unit with the addition of epicyclic reduction. This technology has now been extended across the Aardvark Equipment R.W.T. machine range, from 750mm deep right up to 1250mm deep over 6 models.

Tractor Requirements[]

As these Aardvark R.W.T. series machines are substantially engineered, they require modern high horsepower tractors with very large three point linkage lift capacities. Vario transmissions in tractor brands such as Fendt & Massey also help moderate forward speeds in hard digging conditions. The machines have even dug through concrete runways on former WW II airfields.

In extremely hard digging such as concrete runways forward progress is limited to around 30 - 50 metres per hour. In easier going in friable soils or chalk downland speeds can reach up to 400m per hour.

Latest Developments[]

As water becomes a very sought after resource Globally, more & more irrigation utilities are being installed in places such as Australia, whilst developing countries like Nigeria are hungry for hard wired internet connectivity, so the latest machine development from Aardvark Equipment, the R.W.T. 125 model digs the trench, deploys the pipe or cable at the required depth, sifts the harvested spoil & uses it as backfill over the pipe or cable all in one slick operation, whilst also deploying warning tape above the pipe or cable at the regulatory depth.
