The term Stationary Engines can be used to refer to either:

  1. Steam Portable engines as used to power machinery on farms and at early fair grounds that are mounted on wheels, and can be towed from site to site, but do not have the ability to drive (propel) themselves.
  1. Stationary engine as meaning a fixed in place engine that may be a Stationary steam engine like a mill or pumping engine or a compact Internal combustion engine from a 1hp up to 1000 hp. some being mounted on a carriage so could be classed as portable. See List of Engine Manufacturers, But the term is generally used to refer to small Diesel engines or Hot Bulb Engines used to drive a fixed machine.
