The SEAT Tribu is a compact crossover SUV anticipated to be built by the Spanish automaker SEAT, S.A. [1].
SEAT Tribu concept car[]
The first time when the Tribu name was used by SEAT was at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show for a concept car which featured three doors and four bucket seats [1]. This concept was the first project designed entirely by Luc Donckerwolke, the former Lamborghini designer who since 2005 is appointed SEAT's Design Director [1].
SEAT Tribu production model[]
In August 2008, official SEAT designs of a production model were submitted to the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and subsequently leaked [2][3]. The concept car had suffered redical changes, featuring five doors[3] and a more conventional boot opening. Several car magazines were quick to turn these official gray-scale pictures into computer generated images that show the Tribu in near final form, as a rebadged version of the Volkswagen Tiguan[1][3].
Since then, though it has never been clearly stated it will be finally given the production go-ahead in SEAT's main plant at Martorell, Spain,[3] next to the upcoming Audi Q3 [4], in September 2009 its launch has been announced to be deferred in order to ensure a reasonable return on the company's existing recently launched or updated models such as the Exeo and Ibiza. The introduction of the Tribù would not take place until after production of the Audi Q3, scheduled for 2011, had been successfully implemented at the company's Martorell plant [5]. Ultimately the schedule of a possible launch of an SUV under the Tribu name has been affected by the 2009 tie-up of Suzuki with the Volkswagen Group - i.e. SEAT's parent company - in terms of co-ordinating synergies out of the development of a new small crossover SUV basis [6].
