Nuffield M3 (tricycle) NT 1087 of 1949 reg FBL 421 IMG 8694

A Nuffield M3 (tricycle / row crop) of 1949 (note this tractor appears to have had the axle shafts cut off, removing the ability to adjust the rear track width)

The Nuffield M tractor was the first tractor model produced by the Nuffield organisation after World War II in 1948. The tractor was produced in several variants; The M4 was a 4-wheeled version with the M3 the tricycle (row crop) model, both with a BMC TVO engine or a Petrol engine option (the petrol option models being prefixed with a P on the Manufacturers plate). Later a Diesel was introduced as the Nuffield Universal DM4 or DM3, first with a Perkins engine then with BMC's own Diesel engine (post 1954 starting with s/n DE1001)

Specification[]

Options / variations[]

Serial numbers[]

Serial numbers started at NT 5001 in 1948 with only 39 built in the first year. The final production being 1NT15746 (a prefix of 1 being added in 1955 for some reason ? ). The serial number is stamped into the Frame at the front of the offside (rhs - seated) and a brass plate fixed adjacent to number.

Preservation[]

A large number of the tractors are in preservation, and growing in popularity with collectors as indicated by the growth of the Leyland and Nuffield Tractor Club. With larger numbers appearing at the shows. The Tractor World Show-Malvern hosted a substantial display of both Marques, in March 2009. With some interesting examples on display.
