- Skid unit used in the JCB 3C series backhoes.
Timeline[]
- Introduced in 1967 to replace the Nuffield 10/60, with a new twin range gearbox to give a 10F 2R range. Fitted with new rear mudgauards, and restyled Bonnet & nosecone with integral lights. The engine power was raised to 65 hp, and a bigger radiator fitted. The fuel tank was moved to the nose.
- At first the 4/65 had quite a lot of problems. This included vibration issues, which caused many panels to rattle and shake and, in turn crack in severe cases. Nuffield eventually developed crankshaft balancers to alleviate the issue but it is unknown when they became standard.
- Overheating was another common issue due to the positioning of the fuel tank, which restricted air flow, however, it was also due to farmers not cleaning out the side screens regularly.
- The 4/65, if used for heavy tillage work, also tended to ‘eat’ clutches and if a problem ever arose with the original 11 inch unit, a 13 inch unit was usually fitted in its place.
Factory locations[]
Built at Bathgate, Scotland.
Specification[]
See Infobox above for main spec.
- Plessey tandem hydraulic pump.
- Hydraulic Controls changed to quadrant design.
Variations and Options[]
- Bray offered a 4-wd version known as the Bray Four 4/65 of which only about 130 were built over a 3 year period.[1]
- Power steering option offered (expensive) which included a ram inbuilt into the tractors front steering frame and a new Plessey Pump, driven off the timing case. Interestingly, the larger Massey Ferguson 100 series tractors like the 165 and 175 utilised the same system and even had a similar pump and ram, also built by Plessey.
- Bostrum suspension seat
- Single, Dual and Independent clutch options.
