The Lister Goldstar tractor was the result of a project to develop a simple tractor for developing countries in the 1960's, based on a Lister HB2 engine which was of a simple rugged design.
Design[]
The engine was a modified HB2 2 cylinder unit that was designed with modified flanges to bolt a front axle directly on and to the clutch / gearbox casing at the rear. This layout also gave a relatively high clearance, as the HB2 is air cooled there is no big sump or radiator needed.
The transmission was a proprietary ZF unit that had built in gearbox and internal brakes.
The clutch unit was a 9" Borg and Beck unit.
An oil bath air cleaner was sited on the front of the engine, with the cooling air ducted from the rear to reduce dust intake.
Starting was by a hand crank (visible on the front), with a light weight sculptured glass fibre bonnet.
As the design evolved the sophistication rose with the addition of accessories such as lights which defeated the original simple concept and pushed costs up to the point were the mass produced Ferguson TE20 and the Fordson Dexta a similar price.
Production[]
5 prototypes were built and 30 pre-production machines, which were sold to Iran. The project was then dropped as the cost advantage of a simple design was lost as more sophisticated features were added.
preservation[]
There are 3 examples from the 5 UK prototypes known to still exist.
