In the UK new tractors are sold through Main Dealerships (Distributors),and each branch usually sells a particular make, which they have the exclusive right to sell in that area from the manufacturer. Dealers also sell used or second hand (pre owned) tractors taken in in part exchange for new machines (traded in).

Other dealers sell just used (2nd hand) tractors, with some of these specialising in selling older tractors to small/ part time farmers or collectors. Some are now specialising in the collector market by buying and shipping popular or rare models from other countries, as demand has grown. The auctions are a good source but a lot of people are not keen on buying that way. Some dealers will pick machines up at auction that the Main Dealers have moved on, as not suitable for their customer base or too old or tatty, or if over stocked as it is dead money.

These smaller dealers often break tractors that are considered not worth repairing, so are a good source of major parts at a fraction of the new part cost.

They also deal in implements and attachments, often removing them from tractors that come in and tidying them up. The bottom of the yard can be a good place to look for unusual items or parts from older machines and attachments.
