International introduced the R-120 4x4 late in 1955. It was the first mass-produced ¾-ton 4WD pickup, and it got a lot of attention from farmers, hunters, fishermen, utility companies, and others. It was based on the 2WD R-120 but had a higher GVW rating of 7,000 lb. It offered a choice of the 108-hp SD-220 or 131-hp SD-240 engines driving through either a 3- or 4-speed transmission and 2-speed transfer case. The standard tires were 6.50-16, the same as for the 4x2 R120-series. 7.50-16 tires were available to carry the rated load and 9.00-16 for maximum flotation. For the highest ground clearance, 7.00-18 tires were available. In 1956 the R-120 4x4 was restyled at the front end and became the S-120 4x4.
