The 1953 R-series was only slightly revised from the L-series, although it looked considerably different. The main change was a new grille with a single horizontal bar and a large IH emblem in the center. In 1953 all models were powered by the same 100-hp Silver Diamond 220 engine used in the previous L-series. In mid-1954 a compression ratio increase from 6.5 to 7.0 boosted the hp to 104. At the same time a 3-speed fully automatic torque converter transmission was made optional for all light-duty models. Several books describe this as a Hydramatic and Crismon (1995) states that it was a 3-speed Hydramatic sourced from General Motors. It was actually purchased from Borg-Warner (GM didnโt make any 3-speed torque converter automatics at the time, except for the off-highway Torqmatic.) In 1955 International increased the output of the SD-220 engine to 108 hp and made the 131-hp SD-240 engine optional in the R-110 series.
The Travelall was an optional station wagon body fitted to the R-110 series chassis, comparable to the Chevrolet Suburban. The R-110 series came in three specific models: the 4200 lb GVW R-110, 4800 lb R-111, and 5400 lb R-112.
