The 1941 K-5 and the 2-speed rear axle KS-5 replaced the D-30 and DS-30. The K-5 series had a basic rating of 1½ tons, but could be rated as low as ¾-ton or as high as 2-tons depending upon operating conditions. The GVW rating of the K-5 was up slightly to 13,500 lb from 13,200 for the D-30. The HD-232 engine was replaced by a redesigned Green Diamond GRD-233. Horsepower was up substantially from 81 at 3,200 to 93 at 3,400, replacing the K-5 among the more powerful 1½-ton trucks in 1941. In mid-1947 the K-5 was updated slightly with a new grille and became the KB-5. The KB-5 was International’s best-selling model. With a 2-speed rear axle it was named the KBS-5, and more modern looking than the Dodge B-Series Medium-Duty (1948-1950) and the 1948-1950 Ford F-5, if not quite as sleek as the new Studebaker E-Series or Chevrolet Advance Design Loadmaster (1947-1950).
