The totally restyled DF-400 series replaced the previous International DF-405 in mid-1961. The new cab for this conventional series was based on the cab of the DCO and earlier CO-series tilt cabs. The hood was made of fibreglass and tilted forward for engine servicing. The DF-400 series was available with Cummins diesel engines ranging from the 180-hp 672 ci NH-180 up to the 380-hp turbocharged and inter-cooled 855 ci NT-380, as well as Detroit Diesel 2-cycle engines from 218-290 hp. Transmission choices included 4, 5, 10, and 12-speed main boxes and 3 and 4-speed auxiliaries. Eaton, Timken, and International dual-drive tandem rear axles came in standard 2-speed and optional single-speed double-reduction models. The DF-400 series included the DF-402 straight truck and the DF-405 tractor model, both rated at 45000 lb GVW and 79000 lb GCW. In 1965 the DF-402 and DF-405 were consolidated into a single DF-400 model with the maximum GVW rating increased to 54000 lb.
