In the spring of 1937 International replaced the entire C-line with the the new D-line. The D models had very attractive new styling, with more rounded cabs, fenders, hoods, and grilles. Most of the 4-wheel D models used numbers that corresponded to the previous C models. Thus, the C-35 became the D-35, the C-40 became the D-40, and so on. However, the C-1 was replaced by the D-2 to avoid confusion with the earlier Willys-built D-1. The 6-cylinder D-2 had similar specifications to the C-1 except that the 213ci engine had small improvements and the engine model number was changed from HD-1 to HD-213. The D-2 was built in regular (113" wheelbase) and long wheelbase (125") forms. The same basic model fitted with a 4-cylinder Waukesha engine was called the D-5.
