The Farmall 404 was built by International Harvester from 1961 to 1967 in Chicago, Illinois, USA.

Model History[]

For Company history see
Main article: International Harvester

The Farmall 404 replaced the Farmall 240. The C-135 engine from the larger Farmall 340 replaced the C-123 of the 240. A dual-range 8-speed gearbox was available along with the standard 4-speed. The power output increased from 31 pto hp on the 240 to 37 pto hp on the 404, slightly more than for the old, heavier, 340.

Tractor Comparison[]

The Farmall 404 competed well in power, weight, and price with the small row crop tractors from the other American manufacturers, as shown in the table. The Farmall 404 was not replaced at the end of its run because small row crop tractors were losing popularity.
