The Caterpillar D9R crawler tractor was introduced in 1995 as the replacement for the D9N.

The D9R has a 3408C engine producing 405 hp (302 kW) (FWHP). It comes with an advanced modular cooling system (AMOCS), torque divider with free wheel stator, slotted fuel tank, ecology drains, and load-sensing hydraulics. It was also equipped with a choice of universal (U) or straight-universal (SU) dozer blades.

The D9R was manufactured in the USA only, with a 7TL and 8BL serial number prefix.[1]

Modifications Edit

In 1996, Caterpillar made the 3408E Hydraulic/Electric Unit Injector (HEUI) engine standard, beginning with 7TL00557 and 8BL00830.

In 1997, Caterpillar added a three-bolt idler cap mounting, beginning with 7TL00703 and 8BL00934.

Also in 1997, Caterpillar added a redesigned single shank ripper, beginning with 7TL00753 and 8BL01000.

Again in 1997, a Cat monitoring system was added and a demand control fan was optional for the HEUI, beginning with 7TL00852 and 8BL01053.

In 1998, a roller abutment style cap mounting was added, beginning with 7TL01015 and 8BL01282.

Also in 1998, a symmetric idler seal (duo cone) was added, beginning 7TL01057 and 8BL01352.

Again in 1998, Caterpillar made positive pin retention tracks standard, beginning with 7TL01083 and 8BL01365.

Production of 8BL ended in 2000.

Caterpillar introduced two new D9R units in 2000. They have 3408E HEUI engines producing 410 FWHP and come standard with larger primary air cleaners and fuel tanks, new cooling systems and torque converters, and Cat comfort series seats. The differential steer unit has an ABK prefix; the clutch/brake unit has an ACL prefix.

Production of the 7TL ended in 2003 and the ACL, in 2005.

Caterpillar introduced a new D9R unit in 2005, with a WDM prefix. It has the same features as the 7TL and 8BL units, except with clutch/brake steering.

Production of the ABK ended in 2006.

The Caterpillar D9R was replaced by the Caterpillar D9T.

Serial numbersEdit

Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 4,900 Caterpillar D9R crawler tractors have been produced.
