Cat D4 with winch at Neath 2012 - IMG 7940

At Neath 2012

The Caterpillar D4 track-type series tractor is a small bulldozer manufactured by Caterpillar Inc.. It replaced the Caterpillar RD4 4G series.

History

Caterpillar first introduced the D4 in 1938 as the diesel follow on to the successful CAT 30 gas model.[1] In 1935 Caterpillar started the naming convention of 'D' for diesel or 'R' for regular gas followed by a number to indicate the relative size.[2] At the time of introduction the D4 engine produced about 40HP so the 4 indicated the relative engine power. The D4 series engines quickly increased in power so the numbers just became a figure of merit rather than indicating actual engine power.

Model range

  • Caterpillar RD4 - 1936-39 when re-designated D4 but still with Cat D4400 engine. s/n = 4G, 7J, 2T, 5T
  • Caterpillar D4 - 1947-59 6U (44 inch) + 7U (60 inch) Cat D315 engine approximately 60,000 built.
  • Caterpillar D4B
  • Caterpillar D4C - 1987-90 1RJ - D4C II 1990-93 83J - D4C III (82 hp)
  • Caterpillar D4D - see table below
  • Caterpillar D4E - 27x/28x new ROPS Cab added
  • Caterpillar D4G
  • Caterpillar D4H
  • Caterpillar D4K

The D4 was built in many plants around the world.(I managed to find the following info regarding the serial no. prefixes for D4Ds, they surely did make them all over the place) [3]
