The Caterpillar 953 crawler loader was introduced in 1981 in the USA, Japan, and France.

The 953 has a 3204 direct injection turbocharged, four-cylinder engine producing 110 flywheel horsepower (FWHP). It has a hydrostatic transmission. It comes standard with an electronic monitoring system, sealed and lubricated tracks, oscillating undercarriage, and a Z-bar linkage.
The 953 was manufactured in the USA, with a 05Z or 76Y serial number prefix; in Japan, with a 44Z or 78Y prefix; and in France, with a 20Z or 77Y prefix.
The 44Z unit has 19.7-inch (50-cm) track shoes. All other units have 15-in. (38-cm) track shoes.
The 20Z, 44Z, and 05Z are Low Ground Pressure (LGP) units with a 71-in. (180-cm) track gauge.
Both American units have a rollover protection system.
Modifications[]
In 1983 Caterpillar increased digging depth, beginning with 20Z00232, 77Y01039, 05Z00345, and 76Y01147. At the same time the 76Y unit received an attachment idler guard. A new scroll fuel system was added to the French units, beginning with 20Z00267 and 77Y01093.
In 1984 Cat added a dual setting relief valve, beginning with 05Z00504 and 76Y01281. A new brake control system was added, beginning with 05Z00529 and 75Y01269. The loader frame was changed, beginning with 44Z00354, 05Z00597, and 76Y01269.
Production ended in the USA in 1984.
In 1985, Cat made modifications to the undercarriage, beginning with 20Z00425, 77Y01395, 44Z00461, and 78Y01005.
Production of 77Y ended in 1986.
In 1987 fuel tank capacity was increased, beginning with 20Z01464.
In 1989 a horizontal hydrostatic filler base was added, beginning with 20Z02894.
In 1990 Cat added a general-purpose bucket with fabricated hinges and a vertical face on the back, beginning with 20Z03491, 44Z00710, and 78Y01180. The track roller frame was changed and the equalizer bar was shortened, beginning with 20Z03520.
Production ended in France in 1992; it was replaced by the Caterpillar 953B.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 10,700 Caterpillar 953 crawler loaders have been produced.
