944A in the S.E. Davis and Son collection
The Caterpillar 944A was a Wheeled Loader built by Caterpillar Inc. in the USA. The Cat 944A loader was built from 1958 in the USA and fro 1961 in the UK at Glasgow.
Spec[]
- The Cat 944A has a four-cylinder Caterpillar D330T engine producing 105 flywheel horsepower (FWHP).
- It comes with powershift transmission as standard.
- 88-inch (224-cm) wheelbase. It is an integral loader unit (rigid chassis).
- The 944 43A series was manufactured in the USA with a diesel engine
- The 944 58A series was powerd by a gasoline engine.
- The 70A series being the U.K. built prefix was fitted with a diesel engine.
Modifications[]
Production of 58A ended in 1963.
That same year, Caterpillar increased the wheelbase of the 43A unit to 96 inches (244 cm), beginning with 43A03012.
In 1968, Cat introduced two new 944 wheel loaders: one in the USA, with an 87J prefix, and the other in Scotland, with a 77J prefix. The 87J and the 77J have a normally aspirated Caterpillar D330c engine.
Production ended in the USA in 1968, and Scotland in 1969.
Based on data from the sales database of Ritchie Bros. Auctioneers, it is estimated that more than 6,100 Caterpillar 944 wheel loaders have been produced.
