These are general vehicle with fixed booms and a basic winch rather than a recovery vehicle and are just for towing in broken down vehicles rather than recovering overturned or seriously crashed vehicles. Early ones were often just conveted in the company work shop from an old chassis a lot being built from cut down busses which had suffered severe body damage.

Different countries and industries use different terms to refer to what are similar vehicles.

Recovery trucks are generally a much more complex vehicle than a breakdown truck or Tow truck and in the USA are often called Wreckers.
