The Gladiator - Burrell No. 3159 at the Beulieu Steam Revival 2010

Burrell no. 3159 - named The Gladiator was built in 1909 by Charles Burrell and Sons of Thetford in Norfolk. The engine was built as a Showman's road locomotive and carries the registration number CO 3823.

Engines history[]

Thomas Whitelegg purchased this Burrell Showmans road locomotive The Gladiator from Anderton & Rowlands in 1932 to haul and power his radio car dodgems. Whiteleggs fun fair, founded by Thomas and Rosins Whitelegg in the 1920s and together with their three sons and two daughters, built up one of the most prominent amusement caterers of the twentieth century. Over the ensuing years they amassed such a vast amount of equipment that they travelled to events such as the Tavistock Goose fair in two sections. Whitelegg owned several Burrell Showmans road locomotives to haul and power their various rides including: King of the Belgians, Dreadnought and also a Fowler Queen Mary (scrapped in 1946).
